About the Role
Crossing Hurdles is looking for a PhD level expert to help evaluate and improve the performance of large language models (LLMs) in various engineering contexts. This position is intended for experienced engineering professionals who appreciate analytical work and structured evaluations of AI-generated technical responses.
You will be critical to ensuring that the engineering explanations provided by the AI systems will be accurate, logically sound and contextually relevant to the engineering application they support. This position is intellectually challenging and is best suited to candidates who value precision, clarity and have the analytical ability to provide good reasoning versus the development of long-term or repetitive elements of a job.
This is a fully remote contract, hourly position with a flexible weekly schedule. It is ideal for an experienced engineer who is looking for real-world impact through work that has a significant amount of meaning, but does not have obligations to an employer for long-term employment.
Key Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of an Engineering AI Specialist is to assess and enhance AI model performance in technical engineering contexts.
This responsibility is executed through the following core activities, which fall under the safety of engineering AI systems:
Refining, developing and fine tuning AI prompts, in order to assist the AI in following a qualitative logical reasoning pathway.
Evaluating AI output, specifically for:
- Qualitative technical correctness
- Quantitative accuracy
- Qualitative logical correctness
Assuring that engineering facts produced by the AI are corroborated by subject matter authorities and trustworthy technical documentation.
Providing annotations for AI output providing clear metrics (for example):
- AI Response Strengths and Qualitative Reasonings
- Errors, Omissions or Incorrect Conceptions
- Areas of Improvement.
- Evaluating AI responses based on their perceived level of difficulty to multiple audiences ranging from students to engineers with multiple years of experience.
- Ensuring ALL responses adhere to acceptable or desirable levels of conversationality, clarity and gradability.
- Maintaining a consistent review framework, standards for MATHEMATICS and PHYSICS based evaluation; use multiple definitions or synonyms to classify output.
- Delivering well-structured and objective written feedback to model(s) “Promot.”
Job Requirements
The individual selected for this position will be a Doctoral Degree holder in an Engineering Discipline or a related technical fields, and possess applicable experience as defined below:
- A PhD in engineering or another technical discipline that provides a unique and distinct advantage to performing in this role;
Have very deep knowledge in at least one engineering discipline as stated below:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Material Science
- Civil/Environmental.
- Clearly demonstrate strong applied skill set of engineering reasoning method and quantitative analysis;
- Demonstrated practical knowledge of using large language model or AI driven application technologies;
- Demonstrated understanding of how an individual physically interacts with AI generated technical documentation;
- Clearly demonstrate superior and professional writing proficiency on complex technical topics;
- Demonstrated extreme attention to detail and demonstrative discipline around analytical methodologies;
- Ability to operate independently by delivering results in a remote or evaluation focused atmosphere.
This Role is NOT for:
* Development/Coding Heavy Role
* Academic Research
* Teaching & Tutoring
The emphasis of this role is around Evaluation, Reasoning & Quality Assurance and does not focus on Model Training or Deployment.
